First Weekend

Saturday is market day in Delft so our morning was spent in the old city center. First we poked around the "old stuff" market, as our land lady called it. The canal streets were lined with endless rows of tents, the most featured item being antique Delft pottery. And we're talking antique by European standards here, so little trinkets like hand painted tile dating from 1630...

Then we moved along to the produce and flower market were garden zucchini, cucumber, 4 red peppers, 5 apricots, a melon, a bunch of carrots and a huge bouquet of flowers came to a grand total of about $11.

After our market morning, we jumped on the inter-city train and then the metro to travel to Berkel en Rodenrijs for the "Welcome Home" party Katja had planned to introduce us to all her local friends with kids about Caleb And Ben's ages. The kids quickly found they could communicate brilliantly through the universal languages of card games, Nerf and YouTube and the adults discovered we share universal challenges in child rearing during this age of inter-connected devices. We had a wonderful time and I want to thank Katja and Peter again!

Today the families shared time again, but this time at our place in Delft. After a ruckus game of Trouble and lunch,

We toured the 'hood

And Monday my interviews begin that are part of the research I'm doing that initiated our trip to NL. So to wrap up the day, I explored the Technical University of Delft campus where I will head tomorrow.

  2. What an amazing opportunity for you and especially the boys! It must be wonderful to see your ads hosts after all these years. And for them to make such an effort to welcome and include the boys reflects a truly generous spirit. Glad things are going so well.
